Éric Martel was appointed President and Chief Executive Officer of Bombardier and joined the company’s Board of Directors in April 2020.Â
Since assuming leadership, Mr. Martel has repositioned Bombardier as the world’s leading business aviation company. He spearheaded the launch of the Bombardier Challenger 3500 and the Bombardier Global 8000, the fastest business jet in the world, while expanding Bombardier’s global service footprint, driving strategic growth, and leading a disciplined financial turnaround that has strengthened the company’s stability and long-term performance.
In 2022, Mr. Martel announced the creation of Bombardier Defense, establishing it as a core pillar of the company’s long-term growth strategy. Under his direction, Bombardier is leveraging its industry-leading aircraft portfolio to deliver customized solutions to the world’s most discerning government and militaries.
Mr. Martel’s leadership is widely recognized for fostering a high-performance, agile and dynamic corporate culture. Under his guidance, Bombardier has been named an employer of choice by Forbes, the Financial Times, the Conseil du patronat du Québec and Montréal’s Top Employers, achieving a worldwide industry‑leading superior level of 80% employee engagement since 2024.
Before returning to Bombardier, Mr. Martel was President and CEO of Hydro‑Québec (2015–2020), one of the most significant utilities worldwide, overseeing electricity generation and distribution. From 2002 to 2015, he held top executive roles at Bombardier, including heading the Business Aircraft Division, Aerospace Services, and managing the Global and Challenger aircraft platforms as well as Operations for Bombardier Transportation. Prior to joining Bombardier, he occupied senior roles at Pratt & Whitney, Rolls-Royce, Procter & Gamble and Kraft Foods.
Mr. Martel holds a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Laval University and was awarded an honorary doctorate from Concordia University in 2019. In 2022, he was elected a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering.
A committed community leader, Mr. Martel has supported major philanthropic initiatives for over 25 years, including the Montreal Symphony Orchestra, Old Brewery Mission and Centraide of Greater Montréal, for which he co-chaired the major donors’ campaign in 2019.
